When Love Wins Twice: Celebrating Olivia & Susan

Some love stories arrive in chapters, and Olivia and Susan’s is one I’ll never forget.

We first crossed paths in the fall of 2023 when Olivia secretly planned a proposal disguised as a “family session” (translation: top-secret engagement) at Wildflower Outlook in Ronks. She wanted to surprise her girlfriend (now wife!) and include Susan’s daughter, Shae, in the moment. When the day came, Olivia dropped to one knee, pulled out the ring, and then turned to Shae with a necklace — asking for her blessing, too. Cue the collective ugly-cry from everyone there, myself included. It was tender, intentional, and absolutely perfect.

Fast-forward a year, and life (mixed with politics) made things complicated. In late 2024, Olivia and Susan decided to legally marry at the courthouse to ensure their love was protected — because queer love deserves to be recognized and safeguarded. Shae stood proudly by their side, and I had the honor of both photographing the ceremony and signing as their witness. That day carried so much weight, but it was also proof of what commitment really looks like: choosing each other, again and again, no matter what.

By May 2025, it was finally time to celebrate. Their Thursday evening wedding at Cameron Estate Inn was intimate, joyful, and completely focused on what mattered most — family, love, and presence. The weather showed off for them, the setting was stunning, and the entire day unfolded with ease. Shae stood with them once again as vows were exchanged, cementing this union not just as a marriage, but as the weaving together of a family.

Olivia and Susan’s story is one I’ll treasure forever, not only because of the beauty of their day, but because of the reminder it carries: love wins. Sometimes twice.
